Black River Gorges International Park

The Black River Gorges International Park is the largest protected forested area in the south-western part of Mauritius. A real haven of endemic plants and animals, it is the epitome of a walk in a green paradise. Stretching over an area of 6574 hectares, if offers a trail of over 50Km to trekking lovers.

You can find birds like the Mauritian Kestrel, The Pink Pigeon, and The Mauritian Parakeet amongst others as well as the glee of rivers and rivulets in one of the greenest places to visit in Mauritius. With four different entries from different regions of the island and a picnic area, the Park is ideal place for jogging and walks, for picnics and leisure, for trekking and for an escape in the nature.

Locally known as the Grand Bassin, the Ganga Talao (The Lake of Ganga) is the spiritual capital of Mauritius for its Hindu citizens. Its entry is the long road just aside Pétrin, one of the main entries to the Black River Gorges. Surrounded by green forests and other water bodies like the Mare aux Vacoas, Trou Kanaka and Bassin Blanc, it gives the natural feel of being in a godly heaven with its clean and fresh air, the sound of nature and the bliss of the spiritual auras of the magnificent lake and temples and the melodious sounds of the temples’ bells.

At the entry is the huge and imposing statue of Lord Shiva, welcoming his devotees to his abode. The Ganga Talao is the main destination of the Hindu people on the festival of Mahashivratree, one of the main festivals celebrated in the country. Days before the festival, thousands of devotees take the road to the lake on pilgrimage. They fetch the holy water of the lake and offer it to the Lord on his great night, the MahaShivratree (the Great night of Shiva).

Also known as the Crocodile Park and the La Vanille Nature Park, La VanilleRéserve des Mascareignes is located in the Rivière des Anguilles village in the south of Mauritius. The village in itself is a cultural treasure, having kept the Mauritian originality in the veins of the residents. The houses, the roads, the trees, the air, all breathe out the feel of the real culture of Mauritius.

The Nature Park is the home to a very rich Mauritian flora and fauna. The main attraction being the Nile Crocodiles and Giant Tortoises, the park is also home to a variety of local insects, reptiles and birds. The palm and banana trees, the bamboo hedges, the badamier trees among many others provide shade along with a natural green decor to the place. Colorful insects and reptiles like the gecko and butterflies fill the place with their own touch of magic. Get the chance to feed and play with the giant tortoises, watch beautiful fish in their ponds and see the funny faces of monkeys. Lose yourself in Nature. If you are hungry, why not try some meals of the Mauritius culture in the Park’s restaurant? And why lose the chance of tasting a meal made from crocodile’s meat? Located in the western part of the island, between the two famous beach villages Tamarin and Flic-en Flac, the Casela Nature and Leisure Park is relish to children as well as adults. A zoo with safari and a park for physical activities like trekking, hiking, ziplines, the park is ideal for leisure as well as for adventure. The home of fish, over 150 species of birds, peacocks, moneys, giant tortoise, wild cats, deers, ostriches, kangaroo and many others, the zoo is amazing to visit. Moving on to the South East of Mauritius, near the blue coast of the Mahebourg Village, the Domaine du Chasseur stretches over 1950 hectares, giving nature lovers around 30Km of trails in the heart of nature. With over 1000 of deers and hundreds of wild boars, it is a highly privileged hunting ground in the island. The amazing landscape nurses many protected variety of trees and animals mainly the The Kestrel.
